Magento SMTP Email extension will enable you to use your own SMTP servers (or 3rd party such as Google / GMail) in a few short minutes. Magento SMTP Email supports multiple stores, multiple authentication methods, secure connections, and custom ports. In addition to enabling SMTP e-mail, our module will (optionally) log all outgoing mail and even enable you to optionally log, but not send outgoing mail.
For testing or if you want to send a quick E-mail from within Magento, you may even send e-mails from within the Magento administrative area. In addition, you can add emails to an ignore list which is very useful so you do not get bounced messages from customers who are not using a valid email address.

After trying to find a way to send mail by SMTP - and searching in knowledge bases etc., I only found "solutions" which did NOT work ... .
But then I learned about SMTP Email Plus. After this extension was installed, sending mails works fine - and whithout any problems!

- We are using google to handle our mail and this worked absolutely flawlessly. The only hiccup we had is that I did not know google's connection information, but support was awesome and helped me find this information. - I needed SMTP in order to send mail and this extension did the trick. I really wish magento worked with smtp by default. This has a cool mail logging feature, which allows you to see all the email being sent by magento. I have found it useful on occasion. I have not used it, but you can also send email from the backend. 5 stars. (Posted on 10/18/2011)
