Should I Get Sphinx Search or Lucene Search?
We have two extensions: Sphinx Search and Lucene Search. Result relevancy is similar between both extensions. The primary difference is that Lucene search 1) Can be used on a shared hosting plan. If you are on a shared hosting plan you should get this 2) It is for stores with < 10,000 searchable products. Sphinx search can be used for any number of products but requires being on a vps / dedicated server where Sphinx can be installed.

Cyber monday nearly brought down our store and the cause was people searching. John told us that the sphinx search would reduce load on the database because it is its own search server.
